The League's Structure

The NFL (National Football League) consists of 32 teams divided into two conferences, the AFC and NFC, each with four divisions. Teams play 17 regular-season games, and their standings are determined by overall win–loss records. The highest-performing teams in each conference qualify for the playoffs through a seeded bracket system. The season ends with the AFC and NFC champions competing in the Super Bowl.

The Basic Rules

An NFL game has four 15-minute quarters, and teams switch between playing offense and defense. The offense gets four chances, called downs, to move the ball ten yards; if they do, they get four more. Teams score by getting touchdowns, kicking field goals, or earning extra points and safeties. Because the clock stops for certain plays, time management and decision-making are a big part of the game.

Player Roles and Strategy

NFL teams use different positions to make their plays work, like quarterbacks on offense and linebackers on defense. Each position has its own job, and players work together to move the ball or stop the other team. Coaches plan their strategies based on what their team does well and what the other team struggles with. Good teamwork and preparation can make a big difference in winning games.
